What To Expect In Equine Assisted Counseling or Equine Assisted Learning Session

Differences Between Equine Learning and Equine Therapy

Therapy services are services rendered by a  therapist licensed through a state licensing board to set and achieve agreed upon treatment goals.  Equine Activities and learning are skill based sessions led by a certified equine professional to ehance or build skills.

Comfort considerations

  •  Clothing appropriate for weather conditions, all work is outside
  • · Sunscreen
  • · Bug spray
  • · Allergy medication if needed, for pollen & horse dander
  • · Closed toed tennis shoes, leather boots or mud boots are required (no slides, sandals or Crocs)

Benefits of EAC/EAL

  •   Emotional awareness and regulation
  • · Social Skills
  • · Impulse control
  • · Confidence
  • · Trust & empathy
  • · Problem solving skills
  • · Focus

Why it works

  •   Horses see us from the inside, out. They react to human emotions, bringing unconscious emotions to awareness
  • · Horses react to incongruence – it doesn’t matter what a human feels, horses just care that humans are honest about what they feel
  • · Horses react to human thoughts, feelings, body language and subtle cues
  • · Horses communicate with body language and subtle cues
  • Horses are highly social and observe certain social rules

Safety

  •   Horses will read and react to all members of the human group. So it’s important to the safety of all humans & horses to stay mindful and focused during the session – no cross or small talk, please. Accidents and injuries happen when humans are not focused or “in the moment”
  • · Follow all directions for where to stand or move
  • · Keep your feet pointed the same way as the horse’s nose or tail to avoid being stepped on
  • · Touching a horse’s face is very intimate, unless the horse asks for a face scratch, avoid touching the face – this will reduce the chances of being bitten
  • · Be careful not to position yourself between a horse and a fence, as there is a risk of being pushed into the fence
  • · To avoid being stepped on, run over or bitten by a reactive horse, always allow the horse an escape by not blocking it’s path forward (don’t stand in front of the nose)
  • · Do not approach a horse from directly behind. If there is a need to walk behind a horse, touch the horse’s hips from the side and keep contact with the rear end while you walk as close to the back legs as possible
  • There are no stupid questions – if you have a question ask it.

Session Structure

  •   Introductions
  • · Processing emotions within the human group outside of horse enclosure.
  • · Mindfulness (mindful check for focus and awareness)
  • · You will work as a herd, to build a relationship with a horse.
  • · You will be asked to build relationships with the horse and the herd to gain trust & cooperation
  • · Processing the session or mindfulness to end sessions
